MAINE BEER TOUR: Wells and Kennebunk Breweries

This area of Maine holds a special place in my heart. My family would vacation in Wells every summer when I was growing up. I would be unable to sleep for a few nights before our trip because I was so excited to visit. Back then I was most excited to visit the arcade, eat a bunch of fried food and go to the beach.

Now, the food, the arcade and the beach are still awesome. Wells and Kennebunk have something else to enjoy…breweries. Don’t get me wrong, the food and the beaches are still great. But, the breweries are really, really good.

Kennebunk Craft Brewery

Hidden Cove Brewing Company

Wells Maine Craft Beer

  • Location: 73 Mile Road, Wells, Maine 04090
  • Hours: Mon – Thurs: 12p – 8p; Fri – Sat: 12p – 9p; Sun: 12p – 8p
  • Indoor/Outdoor Seating?: Both
  • Beer to Try: My personal favorite Hidden Cove beer is Mile Road Pale Ale. It is crisp and light. I think it is a great beer to accompany a day at Wells Beach. If you’re feeling a little bit more adventurous, Hidden Cove has a variety of sour beers that are very interesting. The one that I like the most is Jali, a sour that is brewed with charred jalapenos and aged in tequila barrels. The beer showcases some of the fruitiness of the pepper while also having a little bit of lingering heat.

Sebago Brewpub – Kennebunk

Sebago Brewing
  • Website: http://www.sebagobrewing.com/brewpubs/kennebunk-brewpub/
  • Location: 65 Portland Road, Kennebunk, Maine 04043
  • Hours: Tues – Sat: 11a – 10p
  • Indoor/Outdoor Seating?: Both
  • Beer to Try: Sebago’s beers are incredibly consistent. Sebago has a number of brewpubs throughout southern Maine and the beer that you have in Kennebunk is going to taste just like the beer you will have at the Sebago’s in Gorham or Portland. The beer I typically get is Runabout Red. It is a traditional amber ale with some sweetness coming from the malt. If you want something on the hoppier side, Sebago has been coming out with some really good IPAs. My personal favorites are Haze Forward and Pressed for time. Both are hazy, fruity and juicy and really crushable.

Batson River Brewing and Distilling

Kennebunk Brewery
  • Website: https://batsonriver.com/batson-river-tasting-room/
  • Location: 12 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, Maine 04043
  • Hours: Wed – Fri: 4p – 9p; Sat – Sun: 12p – 9p
  • Indoor/Outdoor Seating?: Both
  • Pro Tip: Batson River has one of the best outdoor beer drinking spots in Kennebunk. While their indoor accommodations are great, their outdoor seating, fire pit, and views cannot be beat. Batson does a great job rotating their beers and they are all really good. When the Estate Pale Ale is on the menu, I order it. I’m a sucker for a beer brewed with all Maine ingredients. It’s a very well-rounded beer with a little hint of hoppy spiciness.

Federal Jack’s/Kennebunkport Brewing

Federal Jack's
  • Website: https://federaljacks.com/
  • Location: 8 Western Avenue, Kennebunk, Maine 04043
  • Hours: Wed – Thurs: 11:30a – 7p; Fri – Sat: 11:30a – 8p; Sun: 12p – 5p
  • Indoor/Outdoor Seating?: Both
  • Pro Tip: Federal Jack’s is incredibly well known brewpub right in the heart of Dock Square. They are the birthplace of Shipyard Brewing and have Shipyard, Sea Dog, and Kennebunkport Brewing beers on tap. When push comes to shove, I don’t think that there is a better feeling than drinking a Sea Dog Sunfish Ale on the deck at Federal Jack’s.
