BREWERY REVIEW: Mast Landing Brewing – Freeport

Mast Landing Brewing Company

Atmosphere: Quite honestly, Mast Landing’s Freeport location looks like it was taken directly from a magazine photo shoot. The façade has a ton of windows that invite in a lot of natural light. Once inside, the room opens up to a minimalist, open space. There is a large bar where you order your beer directly in front of you as you walk in.

To the right, there are some couches with tables along the wall. Further along the right side of the room are more tables. The room then opens up to a large patio that overlooks a grassy area.

The only potential knock against the space is that it is located in a Shaw’s parking lot adjacent to the 295 off ramp. When you are in the building, you really do not notice the location. I did not feel like it made my experience at Mast Landing any worse. But, it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Service: The service was quite prompt and the pours were great. Once we received our beers we really had limited interactions with the staff. They allowed us to enjoy our time at the brewery by ourselves. Once we were done with our beers the staff bussed and sanitized our space really quickly.

Variety/Styles of Beer: When we went to the brewery, they had about 18 beers on tap. While there was a good mix of beer styles available, the tap lines were dominated by IPAs. Along with the IPAs were a Kolsch, a few sours, an American Lager, and their peanut butter stout, Gunner’s Daughter, on CO2 and nitro. If you have not had Gunner’s Daughter, you should do yourself a favor and give it a shot. Most 16 ounce pours were $7.50.

Events (live music/trivia night/etc.):  I was not able to find any information about whether or not there were specific events that were going to be held at the brewery. I was told that the site plans on making small batch beers that would be limited released just for the Freeport location. There is also a food truck on-site, Nighthawk Kitchen, where you can order food to eat while you enjoy your beer.

Overall Thoughts/Recommendations: I think that the new Mast Landing location is a great addition to the Freeport craft beer scene. The atmosphere was clean and inviting and the beers were really, really good. I also like the fact that the location is not directly downtown and close to 295. It serves as a great place to grab a beer after a day a shopping before heading back to Portland, Midcoast, or York County Beaches.
